The relation between shogun and Emperor in Japan

The relations among lords, shogun and Emperor would be explained in short, this way. Emperor has been regarded as the legitimate ruler to govern Japan and shogun was appointed by Emperor as the top of military or his guard, who gained gradually social power with their powerful force. Later, shogun became virtually the ruler of the country.

Emperor has had absolute authority

But shoguns did not get out emperor, instead they made use of the authority of emperor, as their social status was lower than emperors, who lived in a rather ordinary residence, not the solid castles like shogun and lords. In the samurai world, loyalty to the superior authority was most important.

It was honorable to hara-kiri, when a samurai does something wrong in his duty or fail in a fight. On the other hand. samurai was given some kind of rewards when he defeated the enemy or beneficial conducts was made for the domain.

The Imperial Palace

Sengakuji

Sengakuji is a Soto Zen temple located in Minato, Tokyo, known for housing the graves of the 47 Ronin. The 47 Ronin were samurai who avenged their master, Asano Naganori, after he was forced to commit seppuku in 1701 following an incident with Kira Yoshinaka. In 1702, they attacked Kira’s mansion and killed him, an act of loyalty and bravery that has deeply influenced Japanese history and culture.
