[Blog #2] Learning a language is a matter of learning the words first

Most people who learn a language start with grammar or charcters. Learning the rules is tedious and most students lose interest and drop out within three months. Language is not a science. Infants start speaking at about 2 years of age, but they have not learned any grammar. How did they learn to speak?

The first words they learn are “mommy”, “daddy and “milk”. If a baby says “milk,” parents know he/she wants to drink “milk”. Gradually, he/she learns the words they need, such as “pee” and “poop.”

In a coffee shop, you don’t have to say, “Excuse me, a cup of coffee please,” but you can definitely order with one word “coffee.” It is more natural this way. Just by putting the two words together, “ice coffee,” you can more accurately convey the message.

Japanese is not concerned with word order, so there is no need to worry about grammar. I have come to the conclusion that the infant’s way of communicating is the fastest way to improve a language, and the most important thing is how to remember words. Unfortunately, Japanese language classes do not teach you how to remember words. You have to learn by yourself, and it takes an enormous amount of time just to memorize everyday words.
